Located about 5 km from the city of Lagoa, Vila de Carvoeiro offers a group of small beaches cut by rocky cliffs, with clear waters and fine sand, forming idyllic places suitable for tourism, an economic activity that emerged as the main one in the region a few decades ago.
Since time immemorial, Carvoeiro has been the target of much interest. In this stunning stretch of the Algarve coast, where Nature has done wonders, the sea was the last home for Romans, victims of naval battles and storms, whose remains (parts of a Roman anchor) prove its presence.
As a result of frequent pirate raids, several battles were fought along this coast, namely the battle that took place in 1544 between D. Pedro da Cunha’s squadron and the Turkish corsair Xarramet.
According to historical sources, the current name of the village would have derived from the word “Caboiere”, an old fishermen’s village of Arab-medieval origin, which, resisting the signs of time, managed to succeed.
Carvoeiro represents a particularly attractive option for “sun and beach”, golf and water sports tourism.
The mild climate, the quality of the waters, the cut of the coast, the reputation of the golf courses, the accessibility and infrastructure created give Carvoeiro the necessary conditions to assert itself as one of the quality destinations in Portugal, sought after by national tourists and foreigners.
Its main symbol is its beach, Praia de Carvoeiro, and as an international tourist attraction the Monte Carvoeiro area, the highest and most luxurious coastal area in the village.
Also, there is a site called Algar Seco, that is a true wonder of this parish, due to the harmonious set of rocks that form authentic balconies and natural windows overlooking the sea.
Walking by the sea is one of the most beautiful walks you can recommend to anyone visiting Carvoeiro.
